3 Things to Keep an Eye on this Winter for Siding Health

It’s not only your roof that keeps you and your family protected from the elements, but your siding too. Ice and freezing runoff water can have a real impact on your siding, so be sure to take a look at the exterior of your home on a regular basis to ensure it is holding up well against the winter weather. Doing so can lead to you resolving small problems before they turn into big ones. Here are some things to keep an eye on this winter…

1.) Ice Dams

If your home has gutters, ice dams can form in them when snowmelt freezes in the gutters and entirely blocks the drain. This can lead to a few problems the next time snow or freezing rain comes along because the runoff water will have no where to go. This then forces precipitation onto your siding or roof, which makes them both very susceptible to water damage.

2.) Water Damage

If you’ve noticed an ice dam or two on your home, or even several, then you’ll want to check your siding for water damage. Obvious damage like broken pieces of siding are easy enough to spot, but other types of damage may take further inspection. These types of damage include discoloration, curling, warping, and rot.

3.) Mold

If water is allowed to sit without anywhere to go, mold and mildew can easily grow. Moist conditions provide an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive, so keep an eye out for mold and mildew growth along your siding. These fungi can be tricky to spot, but if left unchecked they can considerably damage the health of your home structure.

Ensuring your siding is in top shape throughout the winter can give you peace of mind that the elements won’t be making their way into your home.
