Spring Maintenance Tips for Your Roof
After the long and brutal winter season, it’s important to show your roof some TLC. This rings especially true now that it’s spring and spring cleaning should be in full swing. Every residential roof could go for a simple inspection come springtime, especially since regular maintenance allows roofs to last longer and perform better. Regardless of if you enjoy doing the maintenance yourself or if you need some help from REI Roofing, here are a few things to put on your roof checklist for spring.
Check Out Your Shingles
Take a good look at the shingles on your roof and if any of them are curling, loose, or otherwise damaged, you should look into have them replaced as soon as possible. If any nails are coming out, hammer them right back down. If your shingles, across the board, are looking worn and old, you really should contemplate a replacement. This rings especially true if your roof is getting up there in age.
Look Out for Flashing Damage
If you’re unfamiliar with roof flashing, it’s what connects the different elements of your roof, like walls of dormers, skylights, or where two slopes of the roof come together. Like most anything else, roof flashing can be damaged. Examine the caulking around the flashing for cracking and if you’re adept enough, you can re-caulk the flashing all on your own. If you notice rust spots on the flashing, however, you’ll need to look into having the flashing replaced right away to prevent any water damage.
Ensure There is No Water Damage
If ice dams are common on your roof, the damage they can inflict can result in water damage to your roof, ceilings, and insulation. Staying on top of leaks is important, as leaving them for too long can result in your roof’s underlayment rotting and ultimately destroying your insulation. If you spot the leak but aren’t sure how to go about fixing it, get in touch with us here at REI Roofing. Our team has the know-how on how to best tackle your situation.
